The Constant Hunger of Desire

Note:  The official home of Seeing is Believing; Believing is Achieving has moved to: www.sibbia.com

My long awaited package arrived today. Inside were two books, one of which I’ve been waiting years for. I can remember finishing the book before this one. The tension I felt as the conflict in the story grew, the bitter disappointment as the book wound to a close but the story did not.

I frantically searched for the title of the next book determined that I would buy it immediately and devour the entire thing in one sitting. But it was not to be, no title or publication dates were forthcoming. Time went on, and for the first time in all my decades of reading, I tracked down the author’s website. From time to time, the author would provide updates. She would tease us here and there with stories of her progress.

Eventually there was a publication date!

And another and another before the book was finally released. Each time I eagerly awaited the book’s release and sighed when the date was changed. I even chose not to preorder at Amazon so I could make sure I had the book on the day it was released, but when the bookstore did not have the book when it should have been released, I decided to order it along with another book that my daughter needed for school.

As I said, the long awaited package came today!

When I got around to opening the package, I pulled out the second book, a beautifully illustrated copy of The Human Body: An Illustrated Guide to its Structure, Function and Disorders, instead. I was enthralled by the pictures and explanations – they even described a few surgical procedures! I showed it to my daughter and we talked before going on with our day.

The long overdue and eagerly awaited book didn’t reach my hands for hours later. When it did, I gave it a hug. I happily remembered the hours I spent with the one before it. I looked at the cover, read the acknowledgments and book flaps, and flipped to the last page to get a page count (697, in case you were wondering).
Then, without any qualms, doubts or hesitation, I decided the book would likely wait until Thanksgiving came along to read it. When all was said and done, I read one sentence of the story, and then pondered the ways I could use a well-written, descriptive book to teach writing.

Now before you write me off for showing such angst over a book only for it not to matter much when it arrived, ask yourself how many times and ways you’ve done the same thing.

We are always pursuing something in life. There is always some goal, object, possession or skill we feel as though we must have.

For some of these things, we tell ourselves, “we deserve it!” For others, the argument is made that our lives will be so much better when X happens. This is yet another case of “I’ll be happy when” which I posted about earlier.

How many people do you know who have gotten a degree and then never worked in that field, or hate the work they do now? How many times have you bought something or signed up for some program to never use the item or service in question? How many times have you longed for something only to find it wasn’t at all what you expected, or nearly as important as you previously thought?

We’ve all done this, consciously or unconsciously. This process steals our joy and power by placing them in something outside ourselves. It robs us of our ability to truly focus on the here and now and distorts our sense of what is and isn’t important.

Part of deciding to be happy, deciding to be conscious, is fully accepting the here and now, even while we work to change it. It requires that we keep our mind’s eye trained on our vision, but our eyes on our current situation.

In this way we protect our health, relationships, sense of self and true priorities while we increase our earning potential, learn a new skill, start a business or any other time consuming venture that could allow us to lose focus.

After all, what would finally reaching our goal or receiving our desired object mean if we’ve sacrificed more essential, but often taken for granted, priorities?

P.S.
For anyone who happens to be wondering… the book in question is The High King’s Tomb by Kristen Britain.

The All Encompassing Light of a Smile

Posted by sibbia on November 6, 2007

The best purchase I’ve ever made was of a small book.  So tiny it was, about the size of a 3.5 by 5″ photograph, I practically discounted it when it finally arrived in the mail.  Opening its pages has opened my mind and I am coming to think of it as my personal bible.

The little gem is titled, “Metaphysical Meditations” and is by Paramahansa Yogananda and I want to share two of the meditations with you today.

The Light of Smiles

I will light the match of smiles.  My gloom veil will disappear.  I shall behold my soul in the light of my smiles, hidden behind the accumulated darkness of ages.  When I find myself, I shall race through all hearts with the torch of my soul-smiles.  My heart will smile first, then my eyes and my face.  Every body part will shine in the light of smiles.

I will run amid the thickets of melancholy hearts and make a bonfire of all sorrows.  I am the irresistible fire of smiles.  I will fan myself with the breeze of God-joy and blaze my way through the darkness of all minds.  My smiles will convey His smiles and whoever meets me will catch a whiff of my divine joy.  I will carry fragrant purifying torches of smiles for all hearts.

I will help weeping ones to smile, by smiling myself, even when it is difficult.

In the cheer of all hearts I hear the echo of Thy bliss.  In the friendship of all true hearts I discover Thy friendship.  I rejoice as much in the prosperity of my brothers as I do in my own prosperity.  In helping others to be wise I increase my own wisdom.  In the happiness of all I find my own happiness.

Nothing shall blight my smiles.  Grim death, disease, or failure cannot daunt me.  Disaster cannot really touch me, for within my soul I possess the unconquerable, unchangeable, ever new bliss of God.

O divine silent Laughter, be enthrroned beneath the canopy of my countenance and smile through my soul.

I will be a joy billionaire, finding my wealth in the coin of Thy realm — ever new bliss.  Thus I satisfy my need for spiritual and material prosperity at the same time.

One more that is good to use every day.

Spreading Divine Joy

Beginning with the early dawn each day, I will radiate joy to everyone I meet.  I will be mental sunshine for all who cross my path.  I will burn candles of smiles in the bosoms of the joyless.  Before the unfading light of my cheer, darkness will take flight.

Let my love spread its laughter in all hearts, in every person belonging to every race.  Let my love rest in the hearts of flowers, of animals, and of little specks of star-dust.

I will try to be happy under all circumstances.  I will make up my mind to be happy within myself right now, where I am today.

Let my soul smile through my heart and let my heart smile through my eyes, that I may scatter Thy rich smiles in sad hearts.

I will always behold in my life the perfect, healthy, all-wise, all-blissful image of God.

May you all be always blessed with divine joy, divine peace and the light of inner smiles to chase away the darkness.

Be happy when

Posted by sibbia on October 25, 2007

It’s the same song, time and time again; I’ll be happy when.

I’ll be happy when… I have a car… have a new car… finish my car payments… sell my car.

I’ll be happy when… I start dating… get married… have kids… have the house to myself… get divorced… get remarried

I know I’ll be happy when I:

                   Lose weight!
                   Gain weight!
                   Have more money!

This time I’m sure I’ll be happy when I:

                  Refine my goals!
                  Get it right this time!
                  Make a name for myself!

Have you ever let yourself speak the words, I’ll be happy when?

I’ve spoken before about the power our words hold, our thoughts even more so.  So ask yourself, are you holding your happiness hostage?

It’s time to change the song.

I’ll be happy when…

the sun rises, the stars shine
the wind blows, I sense the divine.

I’ll be happy when…

a baby smiles, a cat purrs
when-ever the slightest pleasant thing occurs.
I’ll be happy…

Today!

There is too much sadness in the world for us to add to it with the constant pursuit of happiness.
Instead of always pursuing happiness, make the choice to slow down and let it catch you.  Then spread it where ever you go.

What would you wish for?

Posted by sibbia on September 8, 2007

When a star is born
They possess a gift or two
One of them is this
They have the power to make a wish come true

When you wish upon a star
Makes no difference who you are
Anything your heart desires will come to you

If your heart is in your dream
No request is too extreme
When you wish upon a star as dreamers do

Fate is kind
She brings to those who love
The sweet fulfillment of their secret longing

Like a bolt out of the blue
Fate steps in and sees you through
When you wish upon a star
Your dreams come true

If you had true power what would you do with it?  What would change? Who would benefit and how?  I’m very familiar with the idea that those responsible enough to be granted “true” power (not just the status money and position can grant you) are also able to realize it can seldom, if ever, be used to cater to individual whims and desires.  That mastery of self and a great love for others would be necessary to wield power effectively.

“If you want to lead the people, you must love the people.”

What would happen if everything you said or thought became truth?  This is a question that deserves to be pondered by anyone who consciously works with the Law of Attraction.  Some forget that all thoughts have energy, and all emotions draw situations — not just the ones we would like to matter at the moment.

The question came to me, as clear as someone’s voice, “Why should we help you?”  And my current desires came to mind… a new car, help with my children, help with the house, more money… and the answers to those thoughts flooded my mind as pictures:  my ability to walk, the car share service I use, my children’s health and vitality, those without a place to live, that all my major bills were paid and I have money in my pocket…

I was chastened and I could find no words to answer why I should be helped, or even considered.  All I thought I wanted felt meaningless and the desire fell away.  In that place of peace I found my answer to the question of why I should be helped.  I smiled and bravely spoke the words:

Because I want to help others.

“We’ll see,” came the reply.

The exchange was new to me and I have no words to even attempt to label it.  I’ve never believed I needed to prove myself worthy and while I’ve wondered alot recently about communication with angels and spirit guides, I know very little about the process, and what I read doesn’t help clear things up for me.

What I do know is that sense of peace and freedom from need hasn’t left me, and when I pulled up my reader to check my favorite blogs, I found myself visiting the Genie King and Genie Princess as they were just leaving Mighty Morgan’s space.

Genie King

Genie Princess

And I couldn’t ignore them as silly (but fun!) as the idea seemed to me.  I came back to the thought of what would I do if my words came true? So I closed my eyes and made a wish.  (see below)

If you’d like to add a wish of your own follow the instructions below:

Success Leaves Clues

Posted by sibbia on August 16, 2007

footprints.gif

Most of us are chasing success in some way.  Be it through realizing personal growth, staying fit and healthy or the achievement of some other goal, most of us are engaged in wooing success.  This is our most intense courtship and demands hours and hours of our time and likely, hundreds (if not thousands) of our dollars.

Yet both Lady Luck and Madam Success only toy and flirt with us, tantalizing us with their wares and enamoring us with their charms before flitting away again, leaving us to continue the chase until…

We decide to own our own success and our own luck.

When we determine that we are always lucky and always successful, when success lives in our mind and hearts, we end that dance, the eternal chase for something outside ourselves.  We stop saying things like, “I’ll be happy when… (I get a new job, make more money, find a wife, find a husband, lose 50 lbs, get a new car…),” and we stop looking for outside approval.

We become content and happy now, with where we are and where we’re going.

Contrary to popular belief, things may not always go as planned for the master of his or her own destiny but there is the realization that things are going exactly as they should.  Any supposed failure is baptized as success and the master moves forward.

Baptized as success?  Yes!  See through the illusion of failure, lack, limitation, or sickness — name it success!  For you see, when success lives in your heart, it leaves clues.

Search through “mistakes”, “failures”, or any other troubling situation for lessons learned, new ideas and other clues that point the way to even greater achievement.  They are there.  Breadcrumbs that lead you to the path of the life you were meant to live.  Situations, places, people and events, all designed to help you find the way to your greatest good.

So decide right now that you are successful, that you have within you everything you need to succeed, that everything in your life leads you to exactly where you are supposed to be and you’ve begun to make a home for success in the only place you ever needed to find it — in your heart.

Life’s Peaks and Valleys

Posted by sibbia on August 6, 2007

blue-sine-waves.jpg

Life is cyclic.  Seasons change, flowers bloom, then wither and die only to bloom again.  The first buds on a tree’s bare branch heralds the coming of spring then becomes a profusion of flowers, an abundance of shading giving summer leaves, a glorious shower of fall foliage, only to become a bare branch once again.

Neither state is any better or worse than another.  All are necessary and each has its place.  It is simply the way of the world.  There are periods of growth and abundance, as well as death and decay.  Our lives also have these same periods.

Most of the time these seasons are reflected in our lives in the course of a month, a week, or the 24 hours of a day.  If drawn on a graph they would be be shown as many, relatively small, ups and downs.  Nothing too dramatic or earth-shaking.  Life is relatively stable.

There are periods, however, when everything seems to slide downhill.  Health problems, death in the family, marriage troubles, sudden financial loss… they all pile together, gradually picking up steam, until they appear to charge at you with an unstoppable momentum and you are faced with an overwhelming feeling of loss, fear or despair.

Yet… however bad things many seem… whatever problems you are facing… you can handle it.

Life never gives you more than you can handle.  It only seems that way.  So when something has done its best to bring you low, look up!  Aim high!  And be thankful!

Be thankful?  Yes, thankful!  Be glad, be joyful, get happy!  Have you never seen the pendulum on a grandfather clock?  Have you never noticed that however low a sine wave goes, it rises again to a peak just as high?  After every winter, spring comes again.  After every night, a sunrise!  Has the dawn ever failed you?

No matter how long or dark your personal winter is… no matter what choices, conditions or situation brought it about… spring WILL comes.  Hold to that vision of spring.  Turn whatever challenge you are facing, big or small, into an opportunity for growth.

I remember hearing a story of a woman who created a fortune for herself by inventing a gadget that kept toddlers from unrolling the toilet paper!

Every challenge or problem is nothing but a stepping stone to your own good, if you choose to see it that way.

Remember, seeing is believing and believing is achieving.  See your way to happiness, love, joyful abundance and lasting health.

Namaste.

God is Watching!

Posted by sibbia on August 2, 2007

God is watching through your child’s eyes,

God is watching through birds in the skies.

That lone oak stands sentinel too,

and the wind through its leaves whispers God’s words to you.

And the beautiful butterfly that just floated by?

Was just God’s way of saying hi.

God must be watching all you do,

because there’s God looking through your eyes too!

                                                                — Zakiya Carter

A simple, yet very powerful thought to guide our actions is that God is watching.  If the Divine exists in everything we can never be alone, we can never do anything in private.  Accepting and acknowledging the fact that God is always watching can change our actions, if we allow it.

I invite my readers to try living under the realization that God is watching and sees everything we do for two days.  In what way does it change what you do or say?  Does it help you feel closer and more connected to the Divine?

This was the thought I was led to share today.  The final installment of the Effortless Meditation series should appear tomorrow.

Namaste!

Effortless Meditation (Part 2 of 3)

Posted by sibbia on July 30, 2007

Today’s focus is focused daydreaming, or visualization.  This technique is often used specifically as a manifestation tool, and can be used both internally and externally.

External (Manifestation Meditation) — Many of us are familiar with this technique.  It involves holding a firm picture of something you want to achieve (or receive) in your life.  This is a time honored and powerful technique, for nothing is achieved in life without being able to imagine it so.  Yet some of us have not developed this imaging faculty or are so bogged down in the day to day that our thoughts are a reflection of our current experiences and lack the power and joy to motivate us to dream of something else.

For those of us in that situation, we will modify this technique slightly.  First, we create a short list of activities that we have enjoyed in the past, accomplishments we are proud of and/or just periods when we were very happy.  Next, create the same type of list but this time use situations, experiences and externals that have not happened yet.  Review the first list remembering as much detail as possible.  Recreate the same feeling you had in that situation.  Smile.  Picture it.  And transfer that same feeling as you read the list of things that have not happened yet.  Smile and imagine yourself in the new situation feeling as happy and alive as you have in the past or even more so!

Doing this helps align yourself with the happy circumstances you are picturing and other such pleasing situations in general.  Some find it helpful to add pictures representing both things we enjoy and things we would like to experience.  This type of focused daydreaming can also be used with only the first list, as a way to redirect any negative thoughts/emotions that come your way.  Simply reading the list and remember the good things that have occurred in your life and the things that you enjoy in this world can immediately change your outlook, leaving you calmer and more positive.

Internal ((Re)Creation Meditation) — In this case, we are not trying to bring some external thing or circumstance into manifestation.  Instead, we are shaping and creating the person that we want ourselves to be.  A list and memories is also helpful with this technique, though not required.  The first list in this case consists of attributes we want ourselves to have.  While the second contains situations where we have failed to live up to our ideal.  Now instead of beating ourselves up over the times we’ve gotten angry, frustrated, worried, or in some other way temporarily lost our faith, we just relive the situation and this time behave in the manner we wanted to earlier.

See yourself being calm in a situation that once caused you doubt or anger; being patient and relaxed at a time you normally would have been frustrated and impatient.  Use your affirmations and your mental pictures to create the person you want to be.  Immediately combat any negative thought with a positive statement or affirmation.  If the frantic thought comes to you that you’re going to be late, calmly respond that “God guides you to be in the right place at the right time” or “this is simply a lesson I needed to learn about focus, advanced preparation and/or time management.  I am thankful for the lesson and no longer concern myself with anything that is not within my direct control.”

Whatever the situation, learn to treat your thoughts and emotions as something outside yourself.  Let it be an internal conversation, one where you immediately correct or refuse to acknowledge any thought or feeling that does not lead to your own good, or the person you want to become.

This internal technique, in part, is what’s meant by “being the change you want to see”.  Not only will it give you a chance to lead by example, becoming a calmer, happier, more peaceful, helpful person will lead to you seeing more of the same in your own life.

Namaste!

Effortless Meditation (Part One)

Posted by sibbia on July 27, 2007

Meditation or trance is a state or practice that we all engage in several times a day.  Any time we find ourselves daydreaming, lost in thought, reliving an old memory or getting caught in the throes of an emotion, we have enetered a state of trance.

Trance —  A state of complete mental absorption or deep musing; detachment from one’s physical surroundings, as in contemplation or daydreaming.

Meditation — Continued or extended thought; reflection; contemplation.

So the question becomes not if we are able to enter trance or how often we engage in a practice of meditation, but what we choose to meditate on and just how consciously we do so.  Some of us believe we have no time to develop a practice of meditation.  Too much has to be done!  There’s no time.  I’ll do it tomorrow or even I don’t know how to meditate properly.  These are the kind of excuses we tell ourselves.

Well, the title of this post is effortless meditation and to cut through all our excuses, this is what we should include in our day — simple, painless meditation.

Simple Meditation Technique #1:  Reading

Carry around a small book that is inspirational.  It could be religious scripture, a handful of affirmation cards, a book of positive quotes, a list of personal goals or a great book on personal achievement to list a few examples.  Get into the habit of carrying it everywhere and flipping through it to read a section whenever you find yourself having to wait.

Why reading?  Reading engages the imagination, creates new ideas and directs the thoughts.  Any reading does this, so why not actively choose reading material that encourages, uplifts and inspires?

Simple Meditation Technique #2:  Music

Various studies have been done on the effect music has on learning, memory and mood.  Music can stir a wide range of emotions and while the effect music has on us cannot be clearly explained or defined, it is quite easy to demonstrate.  Few are the religious practices that do not have an associated type of music, because of the rapturous, trance-like state it helps induce.

That said to include music as a simple meditation tool choose music by carefully examining the lyrics of the song.  Choose songs where the singer is happy, determined, motivated, and/or thankful.  Both gospel and secular music can be used, just pay close attention to the lyrics.  Another option is to pick instrumental or nature’s music.  Select a variety of music.  Pick some that excites you, some that makes you sway along and some that calms and relaxes you.

Music is easy to include during your daily commute, as you wake and right before you sleep and while you work or study.  Take a minute to focus on the piece you’ve chosen and allow it to move you before you get back to your daily grind.

Happy meditating!
