Goal Setting, Getting Religion and No More Poor Students!

Posted by sibbia on December 15, 2007

A little while ago, I wrote a post called, “But I don’t have the money!”, which deals with limiting beliefs about money and our own personal ability to have something at any given time.

At the end I posed a question, and in the quintessential seeing is believing and believing in achieving vein, and of course practicing what I preach, I’ve been asking myself the same question as well.

Before attending school full-time and some time afterward, I often made the comment about not looking forward to being a “poor college student” or how I’d be a poor college student for a few years but it would all be worthwhile in the long run.

In some ways, I started to create that very reality.

Fast forward a few years and another thought came into my awareness and began to take root in the fertile soil of my mind. That thought is, “I can’t (or shouldn’t) go to graduate school after I graduate. I need to get a job.”

Yet three or four years have passed between my lamenting my evitable fate as a poor college student and the thought that I can’t go to grad school. I’ve done enough work in that time to recognize the thought for what it is — a limiting belief which will play out in the drama of my life if I accept it.

So this means I need to tackle head on the issues which helped create that thought in my head. These are the family obligations that surround my brilliant but difficult child combined with financial concerns.

To that end, I’ve decided to aggressively work on my spiritual development (including a mantra practice, more about that later), family therapy and business building techniques.

To keep myself accountable (and to occasionally solicit helpful input) I’m announcing my goals for 2008 to the blogosphere.

They are to:

  • heal my relationship with my daughter and find her whatever help she needs,
  • gain facility (over 125,000 repetitions) with two mantras and evaluate the results,
  • raise my GPA over 3.59, and
  • earn $2,000 or more a month, part-time, from my own business activities.

I will chronicle my steps to achieving these goals weekly or bi-weekly interspersed with my other writing. If I haven’t made the progress I wanted, I’ll detail that honestly, along with reasons why. Hopefully, what works and what doesn’t will be easy to see and someone else can learn from my trial and error.

My first step for the first two goals have been taken. Monday I will contact the people who are working with me and my daughter and I have chosen my first mantra and have been working with it for a week now. As for my schooling, I’ve decided to start working on organic chem II before the term starts since I have most of the material for that course already. Money is a little trickier — I plan to work on an affiliate program, start another blog, and create a (simple?) program I could use and other bloggers might enjoy.

And this coming Saturday or next, we’ll see how any and all of that works!

Fear

Posted by sibbia on October 5, 2007

“If you have control over it, then there’s no need to worry.  Likewise, if you have no control over it,
there’s no sense in worrying about it.  That takes care of anything you could worry about.”

Fear.  That monumental four letter word.  It is insidious and cunning.  It starts small and whispers in your ear.  It influences your thoughts and gradually takes hold of you — pretty at first, like the vines on a tree or the ivy covering a house, protective even.  It grows slowly, searching for places to lay down new roots. And if you’re not careful, you’ll find yourself ensnared, trapped in its iron-clad hold, struggling to get free.

And that’s only if you’re lucky.  Most of us never try to escape, or realize there is something to escape from.

Fear.

It’s the voice that disguises itself as comfort and security.

Fear.

It’s the reason you haven’t asked for that date.  Haven’t made that call.  Decided to wait before you wrote that book, submitted that proposal, asked for a raise, ventured out on your own…

Fear!

It’s left you unsure, makes you hesitate, steals your power…

FEAR!

It searches for a weakness then grows without bounds!

F E A R !

Either it controls you or you control it.

Fear?

What do you do?

Just take that first step…

Fear?

Seek it out and fight it!

fear??

No…

Strength.

One Word At a Time

Posted by sibbia on September 6, 2007

“The heights by great men reached and kept,
Were not attained by sudden flight,
But they, while their companions slept,
Were toiling upward in the night.”
– Henry Wadsworth Longfellow

One thought.  One phrase.  One word.  Some times this is all a blogger has before they begin to craft a post for their audience.  One simple word becomes the foundation for a gathering of 300 to 500 of its brothers and sisters; the foundation for a compelling argument, a short story, or the latest political commentary.  All begun with one simple thought.

Many writers are familiar with the idea of letting their creations unfold, and discovering the story while in the telling of it.  They don’t know how the story will end and must write to learn what happens to their characters and the land where they live.  Even in  the realm of non-fiction writing, the path between the first word and the last is often a long, winding one.  The journey cannot be accurately predicted ahead.  It must be begun to discover where it leads.

So too does life lead us on long, meandering roads, with twists and turns that defy our best plans and predictions.  Often a path must be chosen with no clear view of what lies ahead, and there is only a thought, idea or strong desire to serve as guidepost.

Just like the writer whose path begins with a solitary word, the road to a life of fulfillment, wealth, success often begins with little but a quiet thought, a simple need… one solitary idea, and the faith to take the first step.

So when there is something you want to accomplish, but you say, I don’t know how.  Something you want to try, but you say, it’ll never work.  Some dream you want to pursue, but you say, when I have more time, when the kids are older, when I have more money…

Take a step.  Gather your faith.  And take a tip from both writers and the designers of the automobile.

For a car can drive through the night for miles and miles by only lighting the way for a few feet ahead, and a book of a thousand pages began as a single word on an otherwise blank page.

So take it one word, one step, one day at a time.

Your Own Personal Theme Song

Posted by sibbia on September 3, 2007

“Oh say, does that star-spangled banner yet wave… O’er the land of the free and the home of the brave?”

National anthems, team fight songs and even company taglines are all used to promote loyalty, recognition and victory.  The right combination of words and music has the power to stir the soul.   It is uplifting and encouraging.  And it can be held onto even in the darkest of times.

I have spoken before about music, and another way to effectively use its influence is to adopt your own personal theme song.  You probably already have a song (or several) that you are drawn to because of the lyrics, some piece of music that seems as if it were written to describe you or some situation you’re going through.

Claim it.  Make it your own.

Pick something that stirs you, that makes you say, “I CAN do this!”

Then… play it when you have success, play it when you think you don’t, play it when you feel discouraged, play it just to say, “this is me, this is true.”

There are thousands of songs out there to choose from, but I’ll share with you some of my favorites.  I’ve worked with them long enough that any one of them can set me back on the right track.

  • Survivor, Destiny’s Child — I originally used this song to help deal with breakups or unexpected mishaps, but now it’s general encouragement. (It’s even good when still attempting crazy physics or statics homework problems at 2 am, which are due the next day of course — truly multipurpose.)

“You thought that I would self-destruct, But I’m still here,  even in my years to come, I’m still gon’ be here.  I’m a survivor (what), I’m not gonna give up (what), I’m not gon’ stop (what), I’m gonna work harder (what),
I’m a survivor (what), I’m gonna make it (what), I will survive (what), Keep on survivin’ (what)!!

  • Everything Louder Than Everything Else, Meatloaf — A strange choice for a theme song perhaps.  This song is useful whenever I have to deal with situations that want me to conform, which really isn’t likely to happen.  Or just to remind me that I’ve come to benefit from being “different”.

If I had to pick just one sample of this song that means the most to mean when I listen to it, it would be:

“If you want to get it done, you got to fight for yourself
And I like my music like I like my life
Everything louder than everything else
Everything louder than everything else
Everything louder than everything else”

  • Fame, Irene Cara — Fame! “I’m going to live forever.  I feel it coming together…”  What more needs to be said?

 Baby, remember my name! 😉

  • What a feeling, Irene Cara — Have you ever really listened to the lyrics of this song??  Attraction in action.

Take your passion, and make it happen
Pictures come alive, you can dance right through your life
What a feeling (I can really have it all)
What a feeling (Pictures come alive when I call)
I can have it all (I can really have it all)

And, number one on the charts of personal theme songs… whatever the problem, whatever the issue, the one that says it all…  Aerosmith’s Dream On!!!

Half my life is in books’ written pages
Lived and learned from fools and from sages
You know it’s true.  All the things come back to you

Sing with me, sing for the year
Sing for the laughter, sing for the tears
Sing with me, if it’s just for today
Maybe tomorrow, the good Lord will take you away

Dream On Dream On Dream On
Dream until your dreams come true
Dream On Dream On Dream On
Dream until your dream comes true
Dream On Dream On Dream On

Readers, dream on, dream big, dream often… dream until your dreams come true.

Ten Questions That Can Change Your Life

Posted by sibbia on August 28, 2007

This is a follow-up to my post, Asking the Right Questions.  I promised questions that can help change your life.  Here are ten questions to help you start your quest!

  • What could I do to bring myself closer and more connected to (God, my mate, my family, other people)?
  • What would I do with my life if money was no object?
  • What could I do to make my world a better, happier, more peaceful place today?
  • How can I live the life of my dreams?
  • What do I really want?
  • What one thing, big or small, could I do to improve my current situation right now?
  • How can I easily tap into an abundance of ideas for (creating more income, advancing my career, finding my perfect mate…)?
  • What can I do to easily earn more money now?
  • What small thing can I do to make my life more meaningful?
  • In what way can I experience abundance today?  What can I do to keep the abundant mindset?

Now, add your own questions and type them out in Word.  Print two copies, one to keep with you and one on your nightstand so they are at hand first thing in the morning and just before you go to sleep. Review them often and be ready for creative insights.

Remember, the key to this practice is repetition and an open mind.  Expect that answers will come to you and be ready to act on them.  Keep a small notebook with you at all times so that you can write down any ideas you have.

Good luck!

Asking the Right Questions

Posted by sibbia on August 24, 2007

We’ve previously discussed the idea of asking for Divine guidance and wisdom in our lives and my last post talks about changing or shifting your energy in order to attract what you want or need.

Now let’s carry that thought one step further.  What would happen if we believed (and acted on the belief) that we already had the answer to any question we might want to ask?  Wouldn’t this just be the realization of the idea that all true knowledge comes from within?

What if, just what if, you already had and knew everything you needed to live the life of your dreams?

How would you feel?  What would you do?  What would be different?

Personal Account

It was once suggested that this blog should be titled “speaking is believing” and for good reason.  If I could impart one idea as paramount it would be to watch your words and thoughts, to be careful what you say to yourself and others.  Recently, a fellow blogger at over at million-dollar-blog.com gave me another way to do just that.

He wrote a post on how to ask the right questions back in May which I discovered a few weeks ago.  It is meant to get you asking the kind of questions you need to get more positive results and is based on the premise that whenever you ask yourself a question, your mind immediately works to find an answer.

After reading this post and paying attention to my normal internal conversations, I realized that I still often asked myself the wrong questions!  And I’m willing to bet that most of us do the same.

For instance, my favorite question has always been, “why?”  If I don’t understand, I want to know why.  If something doesn’t go as planned… I ask why.

Why did this happen?  Why am I in this situation?  Why haven’t I still done <fill in the blank> yet?

Does any of this sound familiar?

In the weeks after reading that post, I’m beginning to replace why with what and how.  It goes like this:

What happened?  How do I respond to it?  What’s the best thing for me to do in this situation?  What can I do now to get this done?

Can you see the difference?

Your mind will respond very differently to the second set of questions than it did the first.  This is a wonderful, simple practice that can be added to your day along with a few regular affirmations.  Just ask yourself a question you need the answer to and wait to see what comes to you, both right then and throughout the day.

Try it for a week and let me know what you think.  Try it today and see what happens!

Start with a question from the million dollar blog and ask yourself, “how could I improve my life or something around me by 1 percent?

Then keep an eye out for my post on questions that can change your life.  Remember, it really is all in your head! 🙂

Changing Your Vibes

Posted by sibbia on August 21, 2007

One of the things new discoveries in science has taught us is that everything vibrates at a certain frequency, that, at its core, everything including us, are vibrating masses of energy.

The Law of Attraction uses this principle by trying to match our own personal vibrations with the energy signature of the object we wish to attract into our life, but how does this happen exactly? Why does it work?

As without, so within

We’ve often heard, and this blog has mentioned, that our external life is just a reflection of our internal situation — that we are co-creators of our physical universe, the sum of all things around and affecting us.  Now what if we also accept that our bodies, our spirits, our minds also reflect the vast sum of all creation?  That our connection and interconnectness cannot be broken?  That we cannot step foot on the earth without the earth also pushing back on us.  That just as a single cell or piece of a hologram describes the whole in its entirety, we also represent the oceans of possibilities, the thoughts, dreams, and knowledge that makes up the sea of divine consciousness.

If we can accept and embrace that being able to think, “I am.  I am here.  I am alive.  I am conscious,” defines us as conscious beings, as consciousness itself, then we must be an inseparable part of the collective human consciousness and able to draw on it!

Created in God’s likeness and image

Every human, each and every one of us, has the ability to transcend his or her limitations.  We each have a divine spark that serves as a connection to the vast creative power of the universe.  Created in God’s likeness and image, we are different than the animals, we are in truth divine beings.  And to the extent that we realize, develop and master that potential inside of each of us, we experience the fulfillment of our desires and goals.  This connection serves as a link to the universal consciousness, the ultimate source of all creativity, inspiration, ability and knowledge.

But how do we use this?

Thoughts are energy

Have you ever passed a restaurant and suddenly had a longing for the food there?  Watched a commercial and decided to buy a particular product?  Walked into a room of people and immediately knew (felt) something was wrong?

In the case of the restaurant and the room of people, you felt the energy of the place which you then took to be your own thought or feeling.  The commercial was designed to create certain emotions and desires (again just energy) which became the thought in your head to buy their product.

How does this help?

Summary

Realizing that “our” thoughts and emotions are just energy states, we can begin to manipulate them to our advantage.  Treat your thoughts/feelings/emotions as something outside of yourself.  Spend time consciously deciding how you will think and feel.  This starts to change your own vibration, the energy signature you create.

Your goal is to become attractive to the things you want and need.

Birds of a feather…

Do this by both specifically resonating with your target objective (through affirmations, pictures, visualizations etc as discussed in other blog entries) and generally creating and sending out “good vibes” whenever possible.  Take time out to engage in activites you enjoy, and share them with others, spend time in caring for someone else, and just live joyfully.

Do your absolute best to find and/or bring joy to everything you do and everyone you interact with, and you can rest assured that joy will continually find its way to you.

All you have to do is, change your vibes!

Success Leaves Clues

Posted by sibbia on August 16, 2007

footprints.gif

Most of us are chasing success in some way.  Be it through realizing personal growth, staying fit and healthy or the achievement of some other goal, most of us are engaged in wooing success.  This is our most intense courtship and demands hours and hours of our time and likely, hundreds (if not thousands) of our dollars.

Yet both Lady Luck and Madam Success only toy and flirt with us, tantalizing us with their wares and enamoring us with their charms before flitting away again, leaving us to continue the chase until…

We decide to own our own success and our own luck.

When we determine that we are always lucky and always successful, when success lives in our mind and hearts, we end that dance, the eternal chase for something outside ourselves.  We stop saying things like, “I’ll be happy when… (I get a new job, make more money, find a wife, find a husband, lose 50 lbs, get a new car…),” and we stop looking for outside approval.

We become content and happy now, with where we are and where we’re going.

Contrary to popular belief, things may not always go as planned for the master of his or her own destiny but there is the realization that things are going exactly as they should.  Any supposed failure is baptized as success and the master moves forward.

Baptized as success?  Yes!  See through the illusion of failure, lack, limitation, or sickness — name it success!  For you see, when success lives in your heart, it leaves clues.

Search through “mistakes”, “failures”, or any other troubling situation for lessons learned, new ideas and other clues that point the way to even greater achievement.  They are there.  Breadcrumbs that lead you to the path of the life you were meant to live.  Situations, places, people and events, all designed to help you find the way to your greatest good.

So decide right now that you are successful, that you have within you everything you need to succeed, that everything in your life leads you to exactly where you are supposed to be and you’ve begun to make a home for success in the only place you ever needed to find it — in your heart.

Food For Thought

Posted by sibbia on August 15, 2007

foods1.jpg

I think it’s becoming clear by now that I am a big fan of including many simple practices for focusing our thoughts, goals and intentions into our daily routine.  Whether we are looking to experience a greater sense of our connection to all things and our place in the Universe, to find guidance on a particular issue, or achieve some physical manifestation, it is beneficial to have as many reminders of our goal as possible — particularly things that excite one or more of the senses.

Art, music and reading have been discussed as potentially untapped sources of inspiration for our daily meditation practices and they can be potent tools when used well.  But there is something else that can engage all our senses and also serve as a creative platform for visualization, affirmations and thanksgiving.  And that would be…

Our food.

Now before you leave the page thinking that I’m finally off my rocker, I ask you to have an open mind.  Many of us were taught to say a prayer over our food, to give thanks before we eat.  For some of us this process is now done quickly without much, if any, thought.  For others it’s been relegated to distant childhood or yearly family gatherings.

But it would be helpful for us all.

When you can, make the process of preparing and eating your food one of thanksgiving, whether it be a simple lunch or elaborate banquet.  Be thankful for the food, your ability to prepare it, the circumstances in your life that have kept you fed.  Bless the food.  See it sustaining you, doing its part to help you achieve your goals.  In that state, take a moment to picture what you want to accomplish and be thankful that it (or something better) will come to pass.

Be happy!  Be cheerful!  Be thankful!

Bon Appetit!!

Prayer Request

Posted by sibbia on August 14, 2007

hands-and-bible.jpg

Wherever two or more are gathered in my name, there I am.

There is, there always has been and always will be, power in prayer.  And just as there is strength in numbers physically, there is strength in combined prayer.

Prayer is sustaining and comforting.  To have the support of a prayer group is encouraging and tremendously more powerful than going it alone.  That said, I’m asking my readers for their help and support for one of our own.  Forgive me for not being able to do this story justice.

Turning Obstacles into Victory

Anne is a 54 year old woman from a small town and still believes in (and reflects) the traditional small-town virtues of respect, honesty, loyalty, perseverance and hard-work.  After 13 years in the manufacturing field, her life took a sudden turn when she was hurt on the job.  In her own words:

“being hurt at work and having people I’d worked with for over 12 years and believed to be friends, turn on me was very painful. But it presented me with the opportunity to finish my book…”

After only nine months back at the workplace, Anne was in a car accident which totaled her truck and left her in need of healing and unable to return to her previous line of work.

For over a year, Anne has worked on recovering and helping her family, all the while depleting her savings, and now after 28 years of payments, she is being threatened with losing her home in November.

P.U.S.H

November is three months away!  Our life situation can change overnight and any challenge or crisis is a situation we can learn from and overcome.  Afterall, the Universe has an abundant supply if we just learn to see and tap into it.  There is most certainly a supply for every demand.  That said, I ask that we all help Anne p.u.s.h!

Pray Until Something Happens!

Here is the summary of the story in Anne’s own words:

“Many things led up to this ..an accident at work which had to be fought with workman comp..then no sooner back to my job of 13 years, I was rear-ended on a blizzard day bringing my son home from the VA hospital. {decided} No fighting that battle with work so I quit to heal, lived off my 401k but healing was for naught…the lawsuit just settled as most settle…very little. BUT my time off gave me the opportunity to finish my first book… my aged parents have me at their full disposal which I am very grateful for, because of the accident my veteran son decided it was time he try to become better by accepting his ptsd, bi-polar and manic depression, take his medication and help the others vets coming home, my daughter is trying to improve her life and I will soon begin college for my Pastoral degree. The Lord works in mysterious ways and I begrudge no-one, none or nothing.”

Please include Anne in your prayers, meditations and visualizations.  Send her love and light and support.  You can leave comments for her here and I will soon create a permanent page for this prayer request (and any others that come to me).  Anne can be contacted directly at:  annies_star@tds.net.

Seeing is believing and believing is achieving — help me prove that statement beyond a shadow of any doubt.

“Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God.” Philippians 4:6
